Most engines nowadays are either bland, ugly, or hidden under plastic. Modern I’d say from the last twenty years or so. Supercars and high end stuff doesn’t count.

Still lots of plastic covers, but the recent MB 4.6 TT V8 has various interesting tubes and other details:

Maserati GranSport is my personal favorite. Not necessarily modern and most certainly high-end. But, to quote Divorce, you can get one for the price of a new Camry!

But I admit I might be partial...

YES. The new 5.0 intake runners remind me a lot of the old SHO engines.

K24 in a TSX. Still a plastic cover, but no obnoxious “i-VTEC” plate.

Gross.

The only extra covers are on the cowl. Very efficient.

Mine could be a little cleaner but I dont need to eat off the damn thing
![]() 01/10/2018 at 19:07 |

Isn’t that the point of a cover though? To route all those houses and cables behind. It cleans up the engine bay and accentuates the parts of the engine everyone wants to see.

as fintail noted about the new Merc V8, I’d say the same about the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio
plenty of plastic, but at least the turbo plumbing isn’t all hidden...
![]() 01/10/2018 at 19:09 |

Everything modern is gonna have some plastic. The R cover is tiny by modern standards. Most of the blue is covering the timing belt.
Magnesium charge pipe and general tidiness does it for me.
![]() 01/10/2018 at 19:09 |

Beautiful, but this definitely falls into the high end category.

![]() 01/10/2018 at 19:10 |

While I agree with you on aesthetics here...these are definitely high end.

I’ve always liked the Toyobaru twins engine bay since there arent any stupid covers on everything like most modern cars. And the way it’s organized seems conducive for actually doing your own maintenance. Not particularly “pretty” but very utilitarian.

Perfection.
![]() 01/10/2018 at 19:16 |

For DI engines, like the new 5.0 for example, the cover quietens the injector tick.

It has an extra cover on the front (the part with the R) that 2.5T doesn’t have:
The blue timing/spark plug cover looks very sharp though.

I’m partial to the gold spark plug cover on the 2.2.
![]() 01/10/2018 at 19:26 |

Yes. That’s the one I was looking for, but I couldn’t remember why it was gold

Mmmmm, was gonna say a transverse whiteblock but you beat me to it...also, super jelly of the teal-on-Atacama combination which is the only proper way to have an R save Saffron.
Anyways, I did this a long time ago and got some curious answers...some standouts were:
Busso 6, as always
Original VR6's

yeah alright, i guess the bird catcher, and competition blower are a bit spendy. the bottom end stands pretty good on its own though.

Yes but it’s a motor.... actually I was going to say that an engine and a Motor are two different things but I stand corrected .
You could argue that a motor is not an engine because it has only one moving part, rather than moving partS plurals. But that’s so somatic bull shit

Trust me, you don’t have to sell me on the virtues of the 2.2. I think it’s the more practical and durable engine. Those ap1 fans though love to talk about 9k. I can’t blame them, 9k is still an amazing number. A lot of cars hit 8200 rpm these days.

It’s too old for this discussion but I’ll accept it because it’s just cool.

It’s 20 years old so it qualifies! I prefer the previous V6 ones but hey, this fits in you rules.

100% agree - any SHO is a good pick. V6 is better but these are awesome. They sound great with an exhaust.
![]() 01/10/2018 at 21:44 |

I plan on picking one up and toying with it one day. I guess I better get on it since people basically scrap them when they kill them.
![]() 01/10/2018 at 21:49 |

I believe that. I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw one. I see the facelifted V6's (2nd gen?) occasionally.
![]() 01/10/2018 at 22:05 |

There is one that I occasionally see in my are. The only other one I saw was in a junkyard. I see first and second gens even less, people are somewhat crazy about those. Oddly enough there is a running and driving Contour SVT in my town.

needs more visible engine. All you see with these is the coolant tank, the intercooler and the alternator.

These are some of the modern motors I’ve had:
My old 98 Camaro SS: Painted LS6 intake and modified Corvette covers
My old 2014 Camaro SS: Aftermarket Painted Covers
And then my current 2017 Camaro SS: Painted to match covers from Chevy.

My (old) Sonic had a nice engine. While it was nothing to brag about, it was easy work on with lots of space around it.
